10 Best Vampire Films Of All Time
4. Only Lovers Left Alive
This film takes the cake when it comes to most romanticised, aesthetically-pleasing vampire love.
Directed by Jim Jarmusch, it explores the relationship between two vampires, Adam and Eve (played by Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton), that has spanned centuries and now sees the living on separate continents. Basically, it's vampires, but in an art film.
Unlike many of the blood-thirsting creatures seen so far on this list, there aren’t many monstrous elements to Adam and Eve. Other than their blood-drinking, and their quick reflexes, they seem almost human.
This is because so many of the themes explored in Only Lovers Left Alive relate to humanity - like any other film (especially in the horror genre), vampire movies can be used as a carrier for an idea. Although Adam verbalises his dislike for humans, he is still a part of human culture. The angst around his unnatural existence, his creations, and his relationship with Eve is an ultimately human feeling.
These stylish, empathetic immortals are a far cry from the ravenous blood-suckers seen in From Dusk Till Dawn or 30 Days of Night. There’s an enjoyment the viewer gets from watching the couple explore Detroit and Tangier, examining life from a different perspective.
