10 Best Vampire Movies Of The 2020s So Far

2. Nosferatu (2024)

This year's Oscars may have snubbed it (with no nominations for best director, actors or picture), but Nosferatu is the stand-out classic vampire film of not just this decade, but perhaps the whole century thus far.

The film focuses Robert Eggers' talents on a remake of FW Murnau's German expressionist film of the same name, taking Nicholas Hoult's 19th-century real estate agent Thomas Hutter to Transylvania, to cut a deal with Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgard), a mysterious recluse who shares a supernatural connection with Hutter's wife Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp).

The story will be deeply familiar even to Nosferatu virgins, as it is a close retelling of Bram Stoker's original Dracula tale (with names and places changed to avoid copyright infringement). But that doesn't mean it hasn't anything new to offer. For such a well-trodden property, Nosferatu manages to feel both classic and fresh, boldly staging its period with elaborate costumes and sets, while offering up some thoroughly modern scares and sexual underpinnings.

Rather than focus on Thomas or the Count, Eggers makes Ellen the centre of his story, and Depp delivers time and again in the performance of a woman blighted by her own sexuality, fighting for control of her life. The film is stunning, the performances breath-taking, and there is no doubt this is one vampire flick you will be returning to for years to come.
