Ariane Louis-Seize's Québécois indie vamp flick Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person came out of left field in 2023, offering up a coming-of-age story for those who prefer dark corners, black clothes and blood bag snack packs.

The horror comedy touches down in the east of Canada, where the common tongue is French, the culture American-adjacent (poutine notwithstanding) and vampires a bedded-in component of their society. Teen vampire (68 in human years) Sasha (Sara Montpetit) is sent to live with her cousin in order to get over her moral qualms about chowing down on humans, where she stumbles upon the answer to her problems - suicidal schoolboy Paul (Felix-Antoine Benard). But whether she can get her teeth out and bite him is another matter.

The film adopts Twilight's basic concept - the conscientious teenage vampire - and pairs it with a soft, moody, super cool aesthetic and the vibe of a quirky late-noughties/early-tens rom-com (Nick and Norah, Moonrise Kingdom, Daydream Nation). It deftly dips into themes of suicide, eating disorders and, uhh, righteous murder, while offering up comedy, violence and romance in equal measure.

Alas, Humanist Vampire's subtitles mean its impact has been muted beyond the international film festivals, and has yet to find anything like the audience it deserves. But, given this is the most original, interesting and downright enjoyable vampire pic this half decade, it's only a matter of time before it comes good.
