Here’s a question. Can a machine die? In most cases, the answer of course would be no. This however, is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and if Arnim Zola can die then so can Ultron. His defeat seemed relatively final, so until he appears again in the future it’s fair to consider the AI programme deceased.

In the Battle of Sokovia, Ultron inhabited countless bodies that essentially became cannon fodder for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The problem was that so long as a single one of these bodies was moving, then Ultron could live.

The villain had his arse kicked in all kinds of ways during this battle, from the Hulk hurling him from a quinjet, to Wanda removing his heart, and being on the business end of Thor, Iron Man, and Vision’s particular energy blasts all at once.

The final nail in the coffin however, came from the newest Avenger. Vision and Ultron had a connection in quite a literal way, and before his death, Ultron had a quiet but poignant moment with what would have been his own impenetrable body. One blast from the Mind Stone later and Ultron was gone.
