10 Best Winter Themed Horror Films

3. The Shining

Wind Chill Emily Blunt
Warner Bros.

No list about films set in cold, harsh weather would be complete without this classic we all know and love: The Shining. Based on the book, which was released in 1977 by the master of horror Stephen King, the movie was unleashed in 1980, written and directed by Stanley Kubrick and starred acting legend Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duval.

The story follows central character Jack Torrance, a writer who takes on a job over winter being the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel. Bringing his wife and child with him, things soon turn dark and unnerving as the winter storms set in and the family find themselves trapped together, isolated from the outside world and far from help.

There are supernatural elements to the production, however much of the horror lies in the depths of depravity one man can go to when isolation from the real world finally breaks his connection with reality. The film is considered a classic of the horror genre and has amassed a cult following of fans who view it as one of the best pictures in cinema history.
