U.S. Release Date: February 14th What was this about again? Ethan meets Lena. They fall in love. Lena turns out to be a witch, and on her sixteenth birthday, she will be claimed by either the forces of light or the forces of darkness. Together, these two teens will search for a spell that will prevent their love from being doomed. Now here's a prime example of a movie nobody wanted to see. Released to 2,950 theaters nationwide, "Beautiful Creatures" grossed only $7 million in its opening weekend, putting it at 6th place in the box office overall. It did not do much better afterwards, and by Spring, it could hardly be found in any theater. The movie did not just flop, it disappeared with barely much notice. But why? Well, this movie is part of the growing trend in Hollywood of adapting young adult novels with "franchise potential". Every studio wants to make their own version of "Twilight," but for some reason, Stephanie Meyer's brand of werewolves vs. vampires simply sparkled brighter. "Beautiful Creatures" was adapted from a series of novels entitled the "Caster Chronicles" which were written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. While the novels sold well, I guess nobody was particularly interested in watching this brand of paranormal romance on the big screen, especially with it starring two relative newcomers. Meanwhile, older moviegoers were probably too busy wondering why Academy-award winning actor Jeremy Irons would agree to do this. And Viola Davis, for that matter.
