6. Jack The Giant Slayer
U.S. Release Date: March 1st What was this about again? A young farmhand named Jack must rescue a princess after he inadvertently opens a gateway to a world filled with giants. Those previous four movies don't even hold a candle to "Jack the Giant Slayer." "Jack the Giant Slayer" was this year's "John Carter." A ridiculously expensive movie released in early March with a fair amount of hype only to be released without much audience interest, losing its studio hundreds of millions of dollars in the process. While a movie losing that much money used to be the stuff of Hollywood legends, these types of occurrences seem to happen in Hollywood about two or three times a year. So what happened to this movie? Why did it flame out so quickly? Like with the other films on this list, it just seems nobody was interested. The film was partly based on "Jack and the Beanstalk," and let's face it, that's nobody's favorite fairy tale. Plus, with "Oz the Great and Powerful" getting released one week after, it's clear that audiences preferred one fantasy adventure movie over another. Like with the young adult novels, it's always going to be risky when you're simply trying to capitalize on a trend. Everyone flocked to see Disney's re-telling of "Alice in Wonderland" three years ago, but since then, attempts to revive other fairy tale characters have had mixed results. In 2012, we had two Snow White movies come out: "Mirror, Mirror" and "Snow White and the Huntsman." While the latter film wound up being a box office hit, "Mirror, Mirror" was not quite as successful. "Mirror, Mirror" actually had a similar box office intake to "Jack the Giant Slayer," but its budget was at least $100 million less. You would think Hollywood would learn a valuable lesson here, but next year's "Maleficient" (which is based on "Sleeping Beauty") has a reported budget of $200 million. Good luck with that one, guys.
