7. Kiera Knightley, The Hole
Based on the novel After the Hole by Guy Burt, The Hole was Knightley's first significant role in a feature film; a performance which earned her a nomination for an Empire Award for Best Newcomer. In a somewhat sinister tale of unrequited love, The Hole follows four private school pupils who have been missing for 18 days. They are later revealed to have been trapped underground for the duration of this period, when a backfired gesture of romance leaves the quartet isolated. Playing upon Knightley's real-life allegations of anorexia, her role comes to an abrupt end when her corpse is stumbled upon; a resultant side effect of her character's bulimic nature. After which, events escalate to ensure this film progresses from tale of misfortune, to full-on bloody nightmare.
