10 Big Movie Twists That Were So Obvious It Actually Hurt

2. Gordon Isn't Dead - The Dark Knight

Warner Bros. Pictures

The Twist: During The Joker's assassination attempt on Mayor Garcia, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) sacrifices himself to protect him, resulting in his own apparent death. However, at the climax of The Joker and Batman's fantastic battle through the streets, it's revealed that Gordon is, in fact, still alive and had actively been pursuing The Joker the whole time, undercover as a SWAT team member. He did it to protect his family.

Why It's Obvious: Just like The Winter Soldier twist, this was a great idea but one ruined by the marketing department. The very first trailer for The Dark Knight showed Gordon in the jail after The Joker is captured, talking about how they found "nothing but knives and lint" on him. Thus, when Gordon "dies" in The Dark Knight, it's painfully obvious that he's going to come back. Had these shots not been included in the trailer, it would've been pretty easy to buy into the deception. What a shame.
