7. Cast Away
Cast Away, directed by Robert Zemeckis, is a 2000 survival movie starring Tom Hanks as a Fedex plane crash survivor, fending for himself with the remnants of the wreckage on a deserted island. It is no surprise therefore that the production did get a little too close for comfort at times.
Even before the movie was made, screenwriter William Boyles took up the challenge to endure a little of what the protagonist Chuck would have to suffer, spending several days secluded on an island of Mexico to learn the skills used in the movie.
Hanks suffered a near death experience just after shooting ceased and the crew were beginning to leave. A small cut that he had endured on the island had become to get swollen and infected after two weeks and the actor saught medical attention, thinking that the wound would be a little infected but easy to clean up.
He found out how wrong he was when the doctor gave him an less than hour to get transported to a hospital immediately, before the blood poisoning he had gained was going to kill him - what a relief that he wasn't actually stranded with nobody around to help him!
