10 Big Movies That Suffered Even Bigger Disasters Whilst Being Made
2. The Wizard Of Oz
The earliest film on this list, and only musical to be mentioned is The Wizard of Oz, released in 1939. It was no secret that the young star Judy Garland suffered a multitude of abuse and control during her time as a young actress, suffering trauma that led in to her acting career in musical movies such as these.
But the narrative of the girl in Oz doesn't end there for nightmare disasters. After relaying through a multitude of writers and directors, extending the film's production by even longer, even the actors on set endured more than they wished in Munckinland.
During the filming of the witches' scene, actress playing the Wicked Witch of the West Margaret Hamilton was surrounded by fire after the antagonist appears in an area of smoke and flames. Something went wrong and the actress suffered third and second degree burns to her face and hands and halting production as she recovered in hospital.
She had since then refused to ever work with fire again in future films - no surprise there!
It has also never been confirmed or denied if an actor playing a munchkin died on set after hanging themselves, seen in the photo above, which caused so much controversy that the new versions of the movie show a bird in place of the mysterious shadow in the background.
