10 Big Questions From Venom's New Trailer
5. Is The CGI Completed?
CGI in trailers is tricky business. On the one hand, trailers are made to sell unfinished films whose effects are still being actively worked on so they should be granted some leeway. On the other hand, Sony could have kept the effects shots to a minimum if they felt they weren't fully completed and ready yet.
The CGI in this trailer is all the more obviously not ready simply because of how much of it there is. Considering that this is the same studio that put out the first trailer for this film that had literally no effects shots in it, they've clearly taken the wrong lesson from that initial backlash and instead decided to just stuff all of the effects shots into this one.
Never once in this trailer does Venom look or feel like he's actually part of a scene. In the way that he's lit, in the way that he moves, he constantly feels like he's been pasted onto frames rather than actually existing within them. Compare this to something like the CGI on Rocket in the Guardians of the Galaxy trailers, in which he genuinely feels as if he lives within those frames.
The later stuff with Riot and Venom fighting feels especially cheesy and looks as ugly as can be. Here's hoping there's still a lot of work left to be done in the next two months before this releases.
