Before this film, adaptations of Michael Crichton novels tended to be box office gold, with Jurassic Park and Congo on the roster of success stories. So when the decision to adapt his novel Eaters of the Dead was made, one could only assume it would follow suit. With a smaller budget compared to others on this list at $160 million, this film seemed headed for success, at least on paper.

Early showings of the film spelled disaster, which caused a series of re-shoots that further pushed up the budget and delayed its release. It was during this time that the movie's named changed from the familiar title of the book on which it was based to the obscure The 13th Warrior.

When the film was released, it grossed only $32 million domestically, followed up by a worldwide gross of $61 million.

Total loss: $99 million
