10 Biggest Controversies In The Marvel Cinematic Universe
1. Edgar Wright Removed From Ant-Man (And How Directors Are Treated)
The Edgar Wright/Ant-Man fiasco has been well-documented in the years following the director's exit from the project in 2014, and in most reports of what actually happened, it's Marvel who's painted as the bad guy. Ironically.
The story goes that Marvel wanted to bring Wright's vision for the film more in line with the rest of their cinematic universe. Sounds fair, right? That's until you consider what that sentence actually means.
They wanted to take a director known for his unique visual flavour, and water it down so Ant-Man would fit more snugly into the rest of the MCU. What's the point of hiring a guy like Wright then? Why not hire a yes man, someone who'll shoot the movie the way the studio tells them to?
Marvel had endured director troubles previously, when they reportedly "fired" Patty Jenkins from Thor: The Dark World without warning, a move that greatly upset star Natalie Portman.
In 2015, there was even more controversy; Joss Whedon had supposedly clashed with the studio over Avengers: Age Of Ultron, with the director favouring scenes like the Hawkeye farm while the studio wanted more scenes that set up future movies, like Thor's dunk in the cave, and this feud quickly turned unpleasant.
Fortunately, Marvel seems to be learning from these past mistakes. Director troubles have been virtually non-existent for the last few years (or they just haven't been reported), but the more successful they get, the more protective they will be of that success, which could mean that exciting directors are restricted in what they are allowed to do.
