For a long time, people didn't believe that the main MCU films would ever reference any of the Marvel shows from Netflix. Shows like Daredevil, The Punisher, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones would occasionally reference the events of the MCU, but it was a very much one-sided relationship as the Netflix stories never played an important role in the films.

The Netflix shows seemed forever separated from the MCU when Disney+ was created, as people did not believe Disney would want to advertise shows on its competition's website. However, in the Hawkeye episode Ronan, this was changed forever. Kingpin, a villain from the Daredevil series, portrayed by the same actor Vincent D'Onofrio, appeared in a cellphone message at the end of the episode before being revealed as the main antagonist of the Hawkeye story.

This episode was released on December 15, 2021, and two days later, on the 17th, Spider-Man: No Way Home entered theatres. No Way Home included an appearance from Daredevil himself, Matt Murdock, portrayed by Charlie Cox. Daredevil was purely acting as a lawyer in this instance, though he does accidentally reveal his powers by instantly reacting to a brick thrown through the window. Audiences are definitely looking forward to more references to the Netflix shows, now that we know that's on the table.
