10 Biggest Missteps In Comic Book Movies

6. Superman Returns - Supes' Son

Superman Returns I was so happy that a sequel to Superman Returns was not announced. Don't get me wrong, I actually like the movie. Brandon Routh did an exceptional job filling the boots of one of the most iconic figures in pop culture, the set pieces were fantastic (but there were too few of them) and the return of John Williams' spine tingling score all contributed to an enjoyable, if slightly underwhelming, Superman experience. So why would I not want to see a sequel? It's simple really, A Superman movie in which Superman has a son is possibly the worst idea in comic book history. Leaving aside the practical impossibilities, what kind of movie would we have been treated to if this had gone ahead? Visions of Clark playing catch in the park, dropping his kid off at school and ,inevitably saving him from some diabolical scheme, sounds about as appealing as watching Superman 4 on repeat for days on end. Man of Steel got a lot of criticism for focusing too much on action and not enough on character, but, if the character in question is going to be a 10 year old boy with superpowers then give me mindless action any day. The reason this is considered a misstep rather than, say, the lack of action, is that it would have directly fed into the sequel's story. Superman Return's is often berated for focusing too much on Clark's love for Lois Lane and this sequel set-up does little to allay any fears that he wouldn't make the same mistake again. If Singer had the chance to do another Superman, he could have fixed a lot of the issues from Returns but he would have been stuck with this seriously misguided plot twist making it the biggest misstep in a movie that is guilty of more than one.
