10 Biggest Mistakes In The Marvel Cinematic Universe
4. The Ten Ringers
Depending on your point of view, the Mandarin reveal in Iron Man 3 was either a comedy goldmine or no laughing matter. Beyond question the single most contentious decision in the MCU thus far, the reveal that the terrorist known as the Mandarin was actually toast of Croydon Trevor Slattery prompted a visceral and often vicious reaction from comic book fans the world over. From the moment it was confirmed that Iron Man was due to enter production, speculation began over whether or not his adventures would feature his traditional nemesis the Mandarin. Jon Favreaus 2008 franchise starter ultimately went in another direction, but eagle-eyed fans noticed the Ten Rings Easter egg and anticipation levels for the characters appearance in Iron Man 3 were understandably high. As such, the Trevor Slattery bait-and-switch inevitably attracted widespread criticism from long-time Marvel aficionados, and audience reaction was split between people who enjoyed the twist and those whose panties ended in a twisted bunch. Marvel knew they were playing with fire on this one and their bravery should be applauded to some extent. Even so, given the number of fans who decried the decision as an insult and a missed opportunity, any list of MCU errors of judgement is duty bound to include the Mandarin debate.
