10 Biggest Movie Controversies Of 2018

4. Vanessa Gets Fridged - Deadpool 2

Many Deadpool fans were left frustrated when Wade's (Ryan Reynolds) girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) was killed off at the beginning of the film.

With the rest of the movie being characterised by Wade's depression and his desire to bring Vanessa back - which, thankfully, he does - this categorically passes for "fridging", a term where a woman is brutally murdered in order to conveniently further the hero's arc.

Now, Baccarin was regrettably busy filming Gotham when Deadpool 2's production was ramping up, so while this temporary death was an elegant-ish solution to an apparently unavoidable problem, it was still enormously disappointing considering that Vanessa spent most of the first film also being a passive object (and eventually a damsel-in-distress).

Many hoped that Vanessa would assume her superhero alter-ego Copycat in Deadpool 2, but no dice.

The recent PG-13 re-edit of the film, Once Upon A Deadpool, actually had Fred Savage draw attention to the whole fridging debacle, but even Deadpool's meta charms aren't really enough to successfully hang a lampshade on the issue.

Fingers crossed that Deadpool's next outing finally gives the character the meaty role she deserves.
