10 Biggest Movie Controversies Of 2018

5. No American Flag Planting During The Moon Landing - First Man

Though Damien Chazelle's incredible dramatisation of the Apollo 11 Moon landings received effusively positive reviews for the most part, the response from the political right wasn't quite so endearing.

Many felt slighted that Chazelle opted not to show Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) and Buzz Aldrin (Corey Stoll) planting the American flag on the Moon, with the flag instead briefly shown already planted later in the sequence.

It's been speculated that this may be partly to blame for the film's underwhelming box office performance, while Chazelle has rejected the notion that this omission was a political statement, but that he simply preferred to focus on lesser-known aspects of the mission.

To anyone outside of the U.S. it's pretty much a non-controversy, but the American right sure knows how to make a lot of whining about nothing, with President Trump even declaring that he had no desire to watch the film as a result.

But with the Moon landing being a human achievement far more than it is an American one, the flag planting really wasn't necessary to depict.
