8. Jessica Chastain Offered Lead Role In True Detective Season 2, Turns It Down

A few months ago HBO's miniseries True Detective took the world by storm. The fact that it's a miniseries was an exceptionally popular talking point, thanks to the fact that none of the actors will be back for a second season. The anthology series will instead tell new stories with new characters each season, prompting a huge wave of Twitter memes and #TrueDetectiveSeason2 suggestions. We've been hearing that season 2 would focus on female characters this time around, and rumor broke this week that Zero Dark Thirty star and Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain had been offered one of those leading roles. As incredible as that casting choice would be, it unfortunately looks like nothing more than a rumor, as Variety reported Wednesday that Chastain herself shot the rumors down at Cannes film festival:
"It's an awkward thing because when all that attention happens - it takes away from whoever plays the role. I'm a big fan of the series. I'm going to watch the second season just like I watched every episode of the first."
Now, let's just pray that this is just a classic case of Hollywood misdirection. Because come on... it's just too perfect.
