9. Gary Whitta Will Adapt Mark Millar's Starlight For Fox

Much of Mark Millar's comic book works have been adapted from page to screen, with a handful more on the way. Books like Kick-Ass, Wanted, and The Secret Service (retitled Kingsman: The Secret Service on film) have been brought to the big screen, while Superior, MPH, Nemesis, Kindergarten Heroes, and Starlight are all in various stages of development. Starlight moved ever closer to fruition this week, as 20th Century Fox hired The Book of Eli and After Earth scribe Gary Whitta, who's also penning Gareth Edwards' Star Wars spin-off, to write the script. Starlight is the story of human space hero Duke McQueen who's called back to the skies for one last adventure. Millar himself described it as "Flash Gordon meets The Dark Knight Returns," and "Buzz Lightyear meets Unforgiven." The last time McQueen saved the galaxy was four decades ago, but when he returned to Earth nobody believed his stories. So, he hangs up his sword and gun, gets married, has kids, and settles down for normal civilian life. That is, until "that old, sparky, Buster Crabbe-era rocket ship comes back and needs him for one last adventure." There's definitely room here for a great film adaptation, and Whitta's experience in that galaxy far, far away should aid him nicely in writing the script for Starlight.
