9. Cell Phones Never Have Signal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIZVcRccCx0&feature=youtu.be The introduction of cell phones was a huge pain in the ass for horror film writers. The genre relies so heavily on isolation, but with the rise of smartphones, everyone now has an easy way of contacting anyone in the world within seconds right in their pocket. Modern horror deals with this in a few possible ways. The first is that the phone is simply out of battery, although this one doesn't happen too often. Theres a great example of this in Drag Me to Hell where the demon actually drains Christines phone battery so she cant use it to call for help. A character in Cloverfield also simply has his phone die, which makes sense since he was out at a party, and then he takes a detour to get a new one. The second way is that the phone towers are just conveniently down and nobody can get signal. Occasionally the killers are the ones responsible, like in Youre Next, while other times there just isn't any explanation for how apparently crappy these people's phone coverage suddenly is. If the movie is at all paranormal, the ghosts can obviously use their ghost powers to disrupt the calls reception, as in The Haunting of Whaley House. In the worst examples, the characters signal just entirely depends on what the plot demands.
