10 Biggest Oscar Goofs Of All Time
1. 'Come On Up And Get It Frank'
If there’s anything worse than falling over on your way to collecting an award, or going up to collect an award because you were incorrectly announced as its recipient, it has to be heading up to collect an award before it’s been announced, because you’re so sure it’s yours.
When Frank Lloyd was awarded Best Director for Cavalcade, fellow nominee (and fellow Frank) Frank Capra took to the stage early, upon hearing “Come on up and get it Frank!”
After realising his mistake, Capra took what he called “the longest, saddest, most shattering walk of my life.”
At the time, he may have felt like a “miserable worm”, but Capra would go on to achieve huge success in the following years, including three Best Director Oscars of his own. In an odd twist of fate, he even succeeded Frank Lloyd as President of the Academy, probably issuing an executive order that all presenters read award winner’s names clearly and eloquently.
It’s a good job the 1933 event wasn’t televised, or Capra’s mistake would live on as one of the most unfortunate goofs in Oscars history.
