10 Biggest Problems Star Wars: Rogue One Faces (And How Lucasfilm Can Fix Them)
7. This Bizarre Photoshop
The Problem: Back in May, EW provided some of the first concrete information on Rogue One, and with it brought an onslaught of new images. One of the most visually alluring was of a squad of Stormtroopers in the seas of Scarif against a stormy backdrop. It was only a couple of months later, however, when the full image was released in HD, that fans spotted something was a bit off; a pair of troopers had been repeated across the image (see the left and right extremes above).
So what? Moviemaking is an industry built on making fake things look real? Well yes, but it came after claims about the image's realism - Gareth Edwards commented at Celebration how the background storm had been a lucky accident, and that he'd been afraid to use it in case people thought it was CGI. Whoops.
How They Can Fix It: I think it's fair to say here that Edwards spoke not knowing of the image doctoring; no doubt the shots of the Stormtroopers against the storm were 100% in camera, but to make this promo image some budding editor thought increased numbers would help.
With this one, not addressing it is the best method. In the pantheon of iffy photoshops, this isn't the worst by far, and seems to be minor enough to not get locked on by fans (few have drawn the CGI parallel).
