Star Wars: Episode IX is set to bring back a lot of fan-favourite characters, including Lando Calrissian, and the supposed-dead Luke Skywalker.

Other familiar faces rumoured to make an appearance include Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader, but perhaps the juiciest rumour we've heard in this regard is that young Emperor Palpatine will have a role to play in the story - and he'll be played by none other than the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith.

During the "Hot Scoop or Shot of Poop" section of a recent episode of The Weekly Planet Podcast, one of the hosts shared some information he'd heard from an anonymous source, who mentioned the possibility that Smith could step into a more youthful Palpatine's shoes. Other details - like how Palpatine would slot into the story - were not revealed along with this rumour.

Smith's role has been kept under wraps since his casting announcement in August, which may indicate that it's of huge importance. Then again, this is the norm for Star Wars movies, so Smith could be playing literally anyone, newcomer or fresh face.
