10 Biggest WTF Moments In Suspiria
6. Susie's Dreams
Shortly after the coven sets its eyes on Susie Bannion as a potential body for their leader, Helena Markos, to inhabit as her next vessel, they begin infecting Susie with dreams and nightmares of her past and future.
Formally speaking, these sequences go full-blown avant-garde. Guadagnino, cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, and editor Walter Fasano opt to really push the boundaries of what can be conveyed in a single few stagnant shots and give these sequences a jarring and visceral power.
In construction alone, they are disorientingly powerful enough to sell Susie's madness, but the kicker is the narrative that the creative team is able to fit inside of them. These sequences explore Susie's sexual explorations and ultimate repression as a young child growing up in a Mennonite family and manage to pull off some excellent foreshadowing for what is to come for Susie's character.
All of this alongside other footage of things such as a naked woman in a bathtub using one of the witch's hooks in the most painful way imaginable and a woman rubbing internal organs all over herself. In short, these sequences feel like legitimate nightmares and have to be seen to be believed.
