10 Bill Murray Movies You Should Throw Out The Window
4. Space Jam
As in-demand as himself as much as a performer, Murray portrayed variations on his own personality in A Very Murray Christmas, Zombieland and, importantly for our list, Space Jam. The family adventure took the classic elements of Looney Tunes, from Bugs Bunny to Marvin the Martian, and took them toward the twenty-first century. Insert ball-bouncing legend Michael Jordan into the mix and the stage was set for a sports showdown featuring animation and live action. '96 must've been a strange year for Murray. He made Larger Than Life and this. Playing Jordan's mate meant we were treated to him sharing scenes with Bugs, Daffy and friends. There was nothing wrong with that. I just wish it hadn't been in that lame, funked-up context that demanded a basketball game between characters who we'd much rather see running amok in a mansion or blowing each other up in a forest. Twenty years on Space Jam looks like a money-grabbing, high concept waste of everyone's time. 2003's Back In Action roped in Steve Martin for a better-constructed ride, but luckily the fad for shunting cartoons into the real world didn't last long.
