10 Bill Murray Movies You Should Throw Out The Window
3. The Razor's Edge
An early dream project of Murray's was The Razor's Edge, a lavish adaptation of the novel by W. Somerset Maugham. He surprised his fans by portraying free spirit Larry Darrell. Having his cosy, privileged existence shattered by going to fight in the First World War, Larry threw away the trappings of luxury and went on an epic quest to discover himself. John Byrum's film took co-writer Murray across the globe, but sadly the quality was left at the airport. Much as I love the guy he's not a heavyweight lead actor. While he shares Darrell's aimlessness, it didn't do him any favours playing against the likes of Denholm Elliott and Theresa Russell. The impression you get is of a large scale drama with the star wandering around clueless in the middle. Crucially for a movie about finding your place in the world you're no wiser about the main character by the end than when you started. Byrum and Murray took the names and the settings, yet faltered in depicting the experience so important to the themes of Maugham's work.
