Although the things that happened on the set of Mel Gibson’s controversial 2004 film The Passion of the Christ were not quite as hazardous as actually being nailed to a cross and left for dead, they were still rather horrific for everybody involved.

Take being struck by lightning while giving the Sermon on the Mount, for example, which is exactly what happened to Jim Caviezel during filming. One second he was waxing lyrical about Christian morality, the next his body was suffering the impact of approximately 30 million volts. A few minutes after this incident, a crew member walked over to Caviezel to check that he was okay, only to be hit by lightning himself.

Caviezel had a pretty consistent run of bad luck while filming The Passion of the Christ. On at least one occasion, he was accidentally flogged. Then, he dislocated his shoulder while carrying a particularly heavy cross. Filming in cold weather while scantily clad also did not do much to improve his health, for he developed a severe lung infection and pneumonia while acting in the crucifixion scene.
