10 Blockbuster Films You Won't Believe Are Turning 20 Years Old

5. 8 Mile

Star Wars Attack of the Clones
Universal Pictures

Starring Eminem in his film debut, 8-Mile followed white rapper Jimmy Smith in his attempt to launch a career in hip-hop under the moniker of B-Rabbit. Also starring Kim Basinger, Michael Shannon, Brittany Murphy, Taryn Manning and Mekhi Phifer, the movie managed to be incredibly high production while garnering plaudits for managing to stay raw, gritty and real.

Eminem wasn't the only rapper featured, with Xzibit, Obie Trice and Proof among the rappers to make cameos in the movie which takes its name from 8 Mile Road - the highway between predominantly African-American Detroit and the largely white suburban communities north where Eminem originally lived.

8 Mile was a monumental success at box office, opening in the US at number one with an opening weekend gross of $51.3 million, and an eventual total of $242 million worldwide. The movie won an Academy Award for Best Original Song, with Eminem's Lose Yourself, while the soundtrack overall has been certified Quadruple Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

But how does 8 Mile hold up 20 years later? Well, it's pretty much still the quintessential rap movie, bar maybe Straight Outta Compton. This movie seems like it was engineered for durability and the juxtaposition of somehow being both well-produced and gritty means this hasn't actually aged at all. Eminem's performance is still as impressive as ever, despite him not following up on an acting career as a result.
