10 Blockbuster Films You Won't Believe Are Turning 20 Years Old

4. Gangs Of New York

Star Wars Attack of the Clones
Miramax Films

This cult movie may have just been the most impressive in terms of trophy haul in 2002! Gangs of New York was originally set in 1862 - 160 years ago - and sees two gangs, Protestant American Natives and Catholic Irish immigrants, battle over territory in Five Points.

Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, John C Reilly, Jim Broadbent and Liam Neeson among others, the star-studded film had been engineered for success - and that's before you add in that Martin Scorsese had been working on the project for 20 years before its release having grown up as an Italian-American in New York.

While the movie garnered positive reviews and grossed over $193 million worldwide, the main takeaway for most was Daniel Day Lewis' performance. Gangs of New York was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis.

The movie had been ready for release in 2001 but was delayed with many reasons being cited since, including the timing of the 9/11 attacks and another film with Leonardo DiCaprio - Catch Me If You Can - being released, and thus turns 20 in December of this year.

So how has it aged? Well, that largely depends on how much you can separate the film from Harvey Weinstein's involvement in it, I guess. We'll leave the moral conundrums to you and just say this movie is still cinematically brilliant. Due to its historical setting, ageing is minimal - and you'll be hard-pushed to find one single performance in any movie that rivals Daniel Day-Lewis' in this cult classic.
