10 Blockbuster Leading Men So Boring They Almost Put Us To Sleep
9. Ryan Reynolds
Boring Blockbusters: Green Lantern (2011), Safe House (2012), R.I.P.D (2013) Ryan Reynolds is an actor who tends to operate best outside of the confines of blockbuster leading man. A veteran of poorly-received comic book movies, the Canadian has given the best performances of his career in either smaller supporting roles or low-budget independent projects, although he was unfortunate enough to take leading roles in two of the biggest box office bombs of recent years. After over a decade in development, the $200m comic book adaptation of Green Lantern saw Reynolds play Hal Jordan, a character as underdeveloped and one-dimensional as the movie's script. Usually a naturally charismatic presence on-screen, Reynolds is buried under an avalanche of exposition and CGI that neuters his talents and results in a protagonist as dull as the movie itself. The following year, Reynolds would play a by-the-numbers CIA rookie in the forgettable Safe House, a predictable actioner largely carried by the always-reliable Denzel Washington. Last year saw the actor co-star with Jeff Bridges in R.I.P.D, a thoroughly terrible Men in Black knock-off that didn't even recoup two-thirds of the $130m budget at the box office. Although Bridges is enjoying himself in a scenery-chewing role, Reynolds is burdened by one of the dullest and poorly-written lead characters in recent blockbuster history. After Blade: Trinity, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Green Lantern and this debacle, perhaps he should stay away from comic book movies. Unless we ever get that R-rated Deapool, of course...
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
