4. Disney's Moana Will Fail To Live Up To Tangled And Frozen
Moana is an upcoming animated musical in the vein of of Tangled and Frozen. In essence, it's the conclusion of a trilogy of films about young females who sing songs and go on a fantasy adventure. Despite Frozen's immense popularity, it was also critically acclaimed, and is regarded by many as a genuinely great movie. Despite not being as ludicrously popular, Tangled was also a solid movie with some great songs. Moana, however, is likely to buck that trend, and will fail to live up to the promise of Tangled and Frozen. Why? Well, for a start, it's radically different than the other two. That in itself is no bad thing, but it seems to have abandoned the more traditionalist approach that appealed to viewers in the case of the other two films. What do I mean by traditionalist? Well, the two films are based on folk tales, with Tangled coming from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Rapunzel and Frozen starting life as a Hans Christian Andersen tale titled The Snow Queen. Moana, on the other hand, is an entirely original idea (about a young navigator who searches for a fabled island). In fact, it wasn't even Ron Clements and Jon Musker's (the film's directors) original idea. The two originally wanted to adapt Terry Pratchett's Mort. Nor was it their only idea, it was just one of a bunch of pitches. On top of that, the music isn't being done by the person who did Tangled and Frozen. It's looking increasingly likely that Moana will be one of Disney's more mixed releases.
