10 Bonkers Harry Potter Theories That Surely Can't Be True

4. Neville Had The Wrong Wand Until Fifth Year

Back to our chosen one, there's another theory about why we didn't really notice Neville Longbottom for a good few years - or rather why we did notice him, but didn't really notice how much of a badass he could be. Because, well, he wasn't. He had his father's old wand, and that's what was hindering him for all those years. The only subject he was any good at, herbology, didn't require wand use. But hang on, you ask, wasn't his father an auror at the Ministry of Magic, and an highly skilled wizard? Yes, but remember what happened when Ron had a broken wand; he couldn't just find a replacement, because the wand chooses the wizard. It was only when Neville got a new wand - in The Order of the Phoenix - that he could unleash all of his hunkish fury on the dark side. Why it's probably not true Actually, it's a nice theory; the message that you don't have to be like your parents, live in their shadows or do what they do, just to be successful, is a nice one for the film to give. And the idea that Neville only became a great wizard after striking out on his own and finding his own identity is also a great one. There are exceptions in the film where wizards use wands that don't belong to them, but this is just a schoolboy: it's actually kind of nice too, that the films don't make a big deal about it. They just up Neville's credibility silently, and leave you to wonder why yourself.
