10 Bonkers Theories About 2015’s Movies That Surely Can’t Be True

5. Thanos Was Behind Ultron - Avengers: Age Of Ultron

The Theory: Everyone was a bit bemused when it was announced the villain of Avengers 2 wouldn't Thanos, but what if he secretly was; what if he was actually behind the creation of Ultron, and that country decimating age was all part of his grander Infinity plan (in this case another attempt to get the Avengers out of the picture)? Why It's Believable: The MCU changed Ultron's origin considerably - not only was it Tony Stark, rather than Hank Pym, who developed him, but the key to the A.I. was a code found in Loki's Sceptre (later revealed to be the Mind Stone). What's interesting here is that it was Thanos who first gave Loki that weapon, suggesting he was in control of that Stone's powers. That whole "I'll do it myself" stuff in the post-credits scene is then a direct reference to the events of the film - he's done pulling strings. Why It Can't Be True: There's nothing in the movie to explicitly disprove this, but it doesn't really gel with the narrative going forward. For this theory to be true, that means Thanos is also in control of Vision, that Ultron's personality was completely controlled and, biggest of all, that he's not totally driven by possessing the stones. Which we definitely know he is.
