Mel Gibson's World War II drama was highly praised, landing Andrew Garfield an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Desmond Doss.

Doss was a young religious man who, despite enrolling for military service refused to kill or even carry a weapon. Despite the ridicule he received from his commanding officers and fellow soldiers, he was eventually hailed as an American hero. During the bloody Battle of Okinawa, he constantly put his life in danger and saved a total of 75 soldiers, earning himself the Medal of Honour. That's one brave solider.

However, one of Doss' most impressive actions was left out of the film because Mel Gibson thought people wouldn't believe it. During the battle Doss is shown batting away a grenade to save his comrades, and is then carried away on a stretcher. In reality Doss was left waiting for hours, and when help finally came he insisted someone else take the stretcher. If that wasn't enough, he then had his arm shattered by a Japanese sniper bullet and was forced to crawl back to safety on his own.
