Another movie whose title did, in fact, let viewers in on the secret that this flick would feature its fair share of monsters, 2007's horror comedy Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer nonetheless earns a place on this list thanks to just how unexpected one of its eponymous monsters is.

Following the story of a plumber who has struggled with anger management ever since he saw his family torn apart by a monster on a camping trip, this fun and gory homage to eighties horror comedies may start slow, but don't be fooled. This pace is designed to wrong foot viewers, as revealed when the loveably goofy night school professor Gordon suddenly turns into a toothier, angrier incarnation of Jabba the Hut out of nowhere.

Okay, so it's not totally out of nowhere, since eagle eyed film fans will recognize that the man playing Gordon is none other than Freddy Krueger himself Robert Englund.

But this impressively realized practical effects monster nonetheless feels utterly unexpected and completely steals the shown in a movie which is packed with otherwise passable effects.
