10 Brilliant Movies That Surprised Everyone
2. Mad Max: Fury Road
In an age of franchises and reboots, it didn’t seem like there was much need to revive “Mad” Max Rockatansky. He last hit our screens in 1985, and by his visit to Thunderdome (alongside Tina Turner), the series seemed to be running out of steam.
How wrong we were. For George Miller, director of the three previous entries (and Babe: Pig In The City), this is a true passion project. He had been trying to get a fourth film off the ground for almost two decades, and Fury Road was not only a worthy continuation to the saga, but one of the best action movies in recent memory.
Gone was Mel Gibson for age and taste reasons, and in was Tom Hardy, scowling and stoic as the titular very angry man. Nicholas Hoult was deliciously slimy as the scheming Nux, but the real casting coup was Charlize Theron as Furiosa.
A skinheaded amputee with action bonafides and an impressively deep character, Theron steals the show throughout.
Miller is also obviously deserving of all the accolades. It’s a visually breathtaking film, pure kinetic style in the best possible way.
