6. Paul Newman Is Woody and Jim Carrey Is Buzz Lightyear

This is definitely one of the more interesting ideas on this list as it actually has some thought put behind it, though not one I could possibly envisage working nearly as well as what we got. Initially, the plan for Pixar's seminal animation Toy Story was going to be for Paul Newman to voice Woody while Jim Carrey took the reigns on Buzz Lightyear. The rather clever notion was that Newman, playing an outdated cowboy doll, would represent Hollywood's old-guard, while Carrey's sleek, shiny space ranger would reflect Hollywood's new age, complete with all of the shiny computer-generated visual flourishes that accompany it. The idea was scrapped because of budgetary constraints, though it was just as well; can anyone imagine someone other than Tim Allen and Tom Hanks in these roles? Hanks lends just the right amount of humanity, Allen the right amount of dumbstruck arrogance to make it work. Plus, had Newman taken the role of Woody, we may not have ever got a third film given his passing several years before production began.
