10 Brilliantly Crazy Movie Fan Theories
4. Alex Jones Thought Machete Would Incite A Race War
A popular right-wing conspiracy about a plot by Mexico to reconquer the seven Southwestern American states resurfaced in May 2010 when Alex Jones claimed Robert Rodriguez’s then-unreleased film Machete sought to fuel a race war.
“The film is dangerous because it glorifies Machete as a hero, invoking his fictional racial struggle alongside clear parallels to current events and headlines ripped from local news,” claimed Jones’ website. “By the end, the vicious killer is cast in the holy light of a martyr; his likeness is placed on religious candles as the Virgin Mary or Jesus Christ would be.”
As it happened, the only ripple that greeted the film’s release was a six man protest at a Bay Area screening where protesters handed out fliers describing the movie (which they hadn’t watched) as anti-white discrimination.
According to the Mercury News, the only weapons in evidence were two cardboard machetes the leader wore around his neck.
