10 Brothers Grimm Tales Which Disney Should Adapt
2. The Six Swans
Plot: When her brothers are turned into swans, a young princess is forced to stay mute in order to free them.
Another tale which provides a showcase for a truly remarkable protagonist, The Six Swans is an impressively epic story. The main character is a princess who is willing to risk a gruesome death in order to rescue her brothers from a curse, and this level of devotion and tenacity is actually pretty inspiring – it’s a sort of bravery which isn’t emphasised often, but deserves to be showcased in a Disney film. The swans have the potential to be memorable characters too – the relationships between brothers and sisters are not explored often enough by Disney, but The Six Swans should provide an opportunity to rectify this.
The Six Swans is not adapted for feature-length often, because there are various challenges facing any adaptation. Some films have done an excellent job depicting a mute protagonist (The Shape of Water springs to mind) but it can still be hard to write for characters who cannot speak. An even greater problem is the need to keep the protagonist active during the middle of the story, as she struggles to deal with the threats around her. However, if the writers deal with these issues effectively, they could create a truly powerful, emotional tale. The Six Swans really deserves to be turned into a major film, and Disney should take a risk and adapt it.
