10 Brothers Grimm Tales Which Disney Should Adapt

1. Rumpelstiltskin

Disney Brave Little Tailor

Plot: A young woman forced to spin straw into gold is visited by a sinister figure who offers to provide a magic solution to her problems. The woman becomes a princess, but when the figure returns, she needs to find out his name in order to protect her child.

Easily the best-known of the stories on this list, Rumpelstiltskin has endured as one of the most popular Brothers Grimm stories, due to its memorable villain and creative storyline. Its protagonist starts out as a helpless young woman under pressure from the men around her, then becomes a proactive and daring lead character. Disney are notorious for their reliance on overprotective dads, so a story centred on a character becoming a mother and protecting her child could really represent a refreshing change.

However, the star attraction of Rumpelstiltskin is the titular imp, who has appeared in a variety of popular films and TV shows over the years. He was the villain of Shrek Forever After and had a prominent role in Once Upon A Time. However, Disney Animation have so far failed to give Rumpelstiltskin a film of his own. Despite the challenges faced in expanding the story, this fairytale has plenty of name recognition, and Disney should still try and put their own spin on it. The looser adaptation style of Frozen and Tangled could really pay off, keeping the basic appeal of the characters and premise whilst doing something truly unique with it.
