5. Striking Distance (Die Hard Over Water)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OrboKJz0jU Perhaps going to darker areas than Die Hard is really prepared to - given that his father is murdered and his cousin seemingly commits suicide, all in the first reel - Striking Distance is nevertheless a decent candidate for a change in direction for Die Hard, given that the plot focuses less on New York, snow, or Russia, and more on water, by way of the Pittsburgh Police River Rescue Squad that Sergeant Tom Hardy (Willis) is a part of. Yes, it's primarily a serial killer film - and an obvious one at that - but imagine seeing Willis demoted to river duty, and then uncovering a conspiracy that sees him go into full-on McClane mode. Plus, it's got a scene in which he kills a bad guy by shoving a taser in his mouth. And he punches his superior in the face at the end. McClane would approve.
