6. 16 Blocks (Die Hard with a Moustache)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9B1bXeNUWGc Another of the better Die Hard efforts, Richard Donner's riveting thriller 16 Blocks has Willis playing Jack Mosley, an alcoholic NYPD detective (sound familiar?) who is tasked last minute with protecting Eddie Bunker (Mos Def), a witness who is about to testify against a rabble of corrupt cops. Mosley and Bunker find themselves assailed by cops trying to save their own hides, causing the grizzled, moustachioed Mosley to reluctantly flash into gear. This is the sort of John McClane we could expect to see in a few years, when he lets the facial hair grow and basically gives up on life. And why else would it suit Die Hard? Like his superb chemistry with Samuel L. Jackson and Justin Long in the third and fourth films, here his banter with Mos Def lightens the load and prevents things from getting too heavy. Though we can't imagine a Die Hard film ending with McClane having a cake shop named after him, we'd buy into just about everything else.
