10 Brutal Movies With The Biggest Body Counts

5. Hacksaw Ridge

Estimated Body Count: 384

Given that two of Mel Gibson's war films touted almost the exact same body count - We Were Soldiers and Hacksaw Ridge - we picked the one with the slight edge.

Say what you will about Gibson, but the guy knows how to craft a compelling movie, and his Best Picture-nominated war epic is also unquestionably one of the most jaw-droppingly violent ever made.

The film's grand irony is that, despite being focused on the experiences of pacifist World War II combat medic Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield), Gibson's film takes every opportunity to show the brutality of war up-close.

The result is a haunting contrast between Doss' weapons-free heroism and the bodily destruction happening around him, Gibson sparing no detail of men being torn apart by machine-gun fire and obliterated by explosives.

If Gibson's intent was to turn the audience's stomach, then he most certainly succeeded.
