10 Brutally Violent Movie Deaths That Came Out Of Nowhere
2. Death By Bottle - Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Pan's Labyrinth is a fantasy film, right? With a little girl as the main character, and a talking faun in it? No way is this going to at any point escalate into disturbing violence right out of the blue. Except it does, and involves just about the most grisly face-smashing since Irreversible's fire extinguisher-meets-human head, instantly turning Guillermo del Toro's beautiful fantasy into a near-on nightmare. The first time we see how cold and ruthless professional fascist swine Captain Vidal (Sergi López) can be is when he comes across two farmers on one of his patrols. Suspecting the eldest of anti-Franco wrongdoings, he searches his things whilst being continually interrupted by the man's son. Instead of shutting up in the face of armed right-wingers, the boy continues to speak out of turn, until Vidal decides enough is enough, and proceeds to bash the young farmer's face in with his own bottle. It's actually two final bullets to the head that finish the guy off, but - to be fair - it's not like he would've lasted much longer anyway. Not without a face. The horror.
