10 Brutally Violent Movie Deaths That Came Out Of Nowhere

3. Death By Deception (Multiple) - The Departed (2006)

For a truly shocking head-shot, see Brad Pitt's death-in-a-closet end in Burn After Reading - because it's hilarious - but for a triple whammy of cranium-bothering mayhem, look no further than Martin Scorsese's The Departed. Throughout this hard-boiled crime thriller, a game of alternating cat and mouse takes place between undercover police officer Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) and mob sympathiser-turned-detective Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon)... by the film's end point, it seems Billy has it all worked out, cuffing Colin in an abandoned building. What kind of Scorsese movie would this be, though, if there wasn't a morally ambiguous climax? Having killed the film's villain (and main Boston PD target), Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson), and committed himself to a goody two-shoes life afresh with his new family, Colin is almost one of the good guys. But still we know Billy is right - Colin must be apprehended for past misdeeds. It doesn't matter anyway, because Colin's fellow insider, Barrigan (James Badge Dale), appears from nowhere and blasts Billy in the head, before executing Billy's one friend in the police force (Anthony Anderson) who arrives to intervene. Colin then takes Barrigan's gun and shoots him in the head, presumably because everyone else was doing it and he, as ever, just wanted to join in.
