10 Canadian Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die

1. Backcountry (2014)

The Shrine
IFC Midnight

This survival horror film tells of the legitimately Canadian potential danger of getting lost in the vast national parks. The cautionary tale warns us that not respecting nature will inevitably result in us facing the consequences of our actions. Alex comes across as overconfident from the beginning of the film, shunning the offer of a map from the ranger, and this does indeed come back to haunt him.

Alex and girlfriend Jen proceed to make numerous bad decisions, from carrying on after Alex injures his foot, to going off the beaten path to find a waterfall. They ignore multiple signs that there is a vicious bear in the vicinity and Alex’s desperation to appear tough when his masculinity is challenged by Brad leads to him getting them hopelessly lost. This isn’t helped by his decision to leave Jen’s phone in the car so she ‘wouldn’t be distracted’.

The infamous bear attack scene is completely brutal, building up the tension and then exploding into a gory first person view of Alex getting mauled. Jen buys some time by using her ‘bear spray’ (is that really a thing?), and there is a temporary reprieve before it returns for its second go. Jen can only watch in horror as the horribly realistic effects show Alex being eaten alive. This scene has definitely traumatized viewers into never going camping again!
