10 Canadian Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die

2. The VVitch (2015)

The Shrine
A24 / Universal Pictures

This creepy supernatural folktale focusses on a Puritan family in 1630s New England who are banished from their community due to a religious dispute and set up a new home next to some woods. Their dog is killed, and baby Sam is abducted and dies at the hand of a witch living in the forest.

In addition to just focussing on the supernatural elements of the story, it is also an excellent exploration into the disintegrating family relationship. The trust between them is further eroded when son Caleb gets lost in the woods and is seduced by the witch. He returns but becomes possessed and dies in a hauntingly convincing scene.

The set is visually stunning, and the director takes full advantage of this, using long takes that create anxiety, enhanced by the creepy soundtrack.

The film is a coming of age story about an outcast girl who eventually finds friendship, and ironically, although not a witch at the outset, her family’s constant accusations throughout the film essentially drive her to become one.

The secondary antagonist, goat ‘Black Phillip’, starts the film akin to a comedic character. However, he provides one of the most gruesome kills, and when he finally talks to Thomasin before morphing into a demon and leading her to the coven, it is one of the most unsettling scenes in the whole film.
