It's still stunning to think that people count Spider-Man 3 as some sort of disaster. The reality is that it was a box office record-breaker for Sony and they were more than happy to greenlight a follow-up from Sam Raimi.

Rumours suggest that the film would have included Mysterio (played by Bruce Campbell, no less), The Lizard, Electro and Vulture, with a set-up for Black Cat to appear in the subsequent fifth movie and for The Sinister Six to be born. There were reportedly lots of drafts of the movie but it never got to a fully finished stage because Sam Raimi was never content with the story. Even without his endorsement, it still sounds like it could have been great with some polish.

Unfortunately, Sony had imposed a rigid release expectation of 2011 and Raimi realised there was no way he could make the deadline, so he dropped out and the studio pressed ahead with their plans for The Amazing Spider-Man reboot instead.

Check out our in-depth (and excellent) take on what really happened with the movie here.
